What should I do with this NWA?

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
I purchased this inexpensive NWA xxx so that I could play around with cleaning, grinding/polishing, and possibly cutting.

When I examined it, I found a small translucent crystal.  Now I'm thinking I'll only grind/polish one of the ends and leave the rest as it is.

What do you think???  Suggestions??

The crystal could likely be a quartz grain from sand that has become part of the surface.
I have seen this many times.

It is fairly weathered. If you cut and grind etc, it might fall apart - if that is alright with you it's fine to experiment.

You will have to be careful or you might wind up with lots of Gilmer pieces.  Wink

He usually uses a hammer to accomplish that.   Grin

Kidding aside, experimenting on a weathered piece like this is worth the price of the piece even if you destroy it just to gain a little insight on the process of cutting, grinding, etc. Have at it.

Here's what I ended up with.  I won't know the weights until my scale arrives.

I don't know if I'll tumble them to take the outside rust off or not....

I really like how the little slice turned out.

Cool...that's what these things are for.  I see lotsa metal!!!

In some. if you look close you can see where these were actually more than one, that have merged at some point in time, and you'll see a lot of metal, than a boundary line with not so much metal.  It's fascinating and the only way you can see this is to experiment with these NWA rocks.
