my first object...

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
Hello,

I have been reading quite a lot in this very interesting forum and I am totally new to the meteorite stuff but have always from childhood on been amazed by the idea to find one...

I now have this piece which I found in an volcanic area on the Cape Verde Islands (Archipelago in the Atlantic ocean, near Dakar, Senegal).

The area is full of special stones, so it is very difficult I think to find a meteorite, but I do not want to give up and I am just starting.
In this area I found lots o obsidiane stones which seem from volcanic origin.

This object however looks different altough it seems to have obsidiane elements in it, but for me it felt totally different and there were no more then 2 pieces of this in a wide area. Also it is very heavy for its size: (5cm x 3cm)

Testing it on magnet, it gets attracted quite strongly to a small neodym magnet.

So please let me know your thoughts, so I can learn a little more and get into this stuff which I find so fascinating.

Thanks for your efforts.

Best regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel and welcome to the Skyrock Cafe. Are the silver colored bits that I see in your photo metal or crystals? If they are metal you should test the stone for nickel content, which is what most meteorites have.

Hello,

thanks for your answer.

The silver colored parts are just reflections from the camera flash on the photo. All the stone is of very black material looking same as obsidiane stone. However obsidian stone is not magnetic as far as I know and this one object is very strongly magnetic.

I am attaching a zoom in of same photo, so you can see better how it really looks.

Daniel, many volcanic (igneous) stones will be attracted to a magnet. Basalts are the most common. If you cut or grind a section of the stone to expose the interior, see if there's any metal flakes or chondrules inside. Judging from the exteriors appearance, I don't think it's a meteorite. But keep looking, there out there.

Hello Jim

thanks for answer. I have also now found that most of these volcanic stones in that area are attracted to a magnet... so very difficult task to get a meteorite recognized...

I will cut the stone in order to see how it looks inside and post a picture here.

ON the same place I also found these little stones (about 1cm long) which seem to me very similar to a meteorite photo of nantan 9 meteorite I have found on a website. I post both here : the photo of the ones I found and the photo of the nantan 9 from another website.

What do you think here ? These little stones are not attracted to a magnet...

Hi Daniel,

Looking forward to seeing the interior photo's of the first specimen.

The second specimen looks like obsidian (a volcanic rock) or possibly tektites. Other members of this forum have more knowledge of tektites than me for identifying them. Nantan meteorites are iron and nothing like your specimens.

Hello,

I managed to break this object and here you have the photo of the inside. It looks like there are iron parts which are rusty.

Daniel, if you can sand and polish the surface we can get a better idea of what the interior looks like.

Here's the before and after photo's of a meteorite (NWA 3118) that I sanded and polished to reveal the interior.
