Hi Scotto and all,

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of sellers are shill bidding on their own items. If not they have other dealers or friends who help them out, then in return they help them out. I have had some real hot items in the past on ebay and have noticed that I don't get the bidding on my items that others seem to get which leads me to the opinion they are doing this.

I am sure ebay doesn't care (unless they get caught) as it makes them more $$

Nuff said.

A lot of sellers use other accounts to raise their bids to make you go higher which is aggravating, I've lost by pennies and time and time again have the same sellers contact me with "Hello, the guy who outbid you can't make payment so I'll offer it to you for your last bid..."
What a crock, like he finds this out and emails me within a minute of the auction ending. Yeah right. And it has happened a lot to me.

That is a terrible thing that sellers do. I wont bid on many auctions due to that being done. I know of several "reputable" dealers that do that.

Well, it looks like Johnno will have a couple of other shots at some SAC 005 material.

http://cgi.ebay.com/24g-Sacramento-Wash-005-Meteorite-Irons-Franconia-/220641902...

http://cgi.ebay.com/25g-Sacramento-Wash-005-Meteorite-Irons-Franconia-/220641878...

It will be interesting to see if the $2.71 / g price holds and who the bidders are.

And while this thread has gone toward sins of sellers and shill bidders, in my opinion Ruben is not one of them.  All my dealings with him have been flawless - same as his character.

I would not want any newbie to get the wrong impression since this thread started with one of his auctions.

Ebay related rant...

New changes coming in August will all but take away the ability for sellers to communicate with potential customers.
The ask a question tab has been moved and hidden at the bottom of the page.

They are also working on making to where sellers can keep potential buyers from being able to ask questions in the form of "smart faqs"

What kind of idiots are the people in charge of doing this?
The same that came up with this idea for dividing its selling groups:
"TRS" stands for Top Rated Seller
then you have the "ASS" (Above Standard Seller)

I hate ebay.

Guess I don't understand the title of the thread ....

Is the gravity on Ebay more or less than the earth ? ... and how is it new ?  I thought gravity was gravity. Maybe it's the new improved gravity ?  What happened to Ebay's old gravity ?    Cheesy

I just did a search for gravity on ebay - over 27,000 listings - surely some of it must be new - probably by some of those above standard sellers Greg mentions.

I agree there is a lot of shill bidding going on...and I mostly don't understand the 'private bidder'.  The big difference between the 'private bidder' and everyone else, is that you can't reference their bidding history.  Everybody is supposedly private to begin with.

Time to use facebook possibly, or some other site to trade in meteorites.

That is a big reason I dont use auctions much. I dont want to take the losses that they can bring.

If I had something listed at .99 that was worth $1000, I admit that I would likely have someone bid on it. To prevent that from ever being an issue, I just dont do it. Its not worth it for me to compromise my values and what I think is right.

I list my material at what its worth (to me or the market) and only use auctions to bring attention to other items. Mike Farmer used to use auctions a good amount more then he does now, but poor prices made him stop. (he even posted such on the metlist a year or so ago, saying for the most part that if people didnt start bidding more, he would not list quality material at auction)

Best thing you can do, people that list with private or you suspect of using shill bidding is to not buy from them.

G'Day Everyone
I got a little bit behind on this one and I don't think I expressed myself very well due to my frustrations. So let's start off

Moonman:
why the hell I said gravity.. I must have been reading some article and it just stuck in my head.

AL:
No I don't think you misunderstood. I had two very small SaC 005, one I gave away and one I've still got. So I got a hair up my butt and thought if I get this, I was going to up the size of what I've got and put together a tribute to Jim that could be passed around on a 12 month basis with proceeds going to Jim's family. But I think I bit off more than I could chew after I collected my thoughts.

VAM:
Thanks for the info on that auction site. I've been looking at many. I was pretty much around at the start of ubid and ended up having a huge run in. Then I played a little with Craig's list, but 99.9% of the time I get spam, that's if it stays on. Usually within a day, it's flagged and pulled down. Spacifieds that Eric put up, I threw my Hasselblad on that and ended up selling it to a lovely lady 20 minutes from where I live. Since then, we've become friends and she's helping  with alot of antique junk I have here. She has a degree in Fine Arts and Antiquities so that was a plus. I might have to consult her on my coin collection, which I've been collecting since I was 10 that I'm going to let go shortly.

Thanks for the head's up on the SAC 005

And I also second what you said in regards to Ruben. He's a fine gentleman.

So to sum it up so I can get back to reading the rest of the posts...

My whole issue here was NOT with the buyer or the seller. My issues were with Ebay.  It's getting frustrating.

Cheers
Johnno

Thanks again members for your input, it's much appreciated.

Ive sold my work on Ebay since 1999 or 2000, it was worse before when they charged 25 cents per photo and 50 cents for subtitles, nickel and diming you to death.
Now you can put things up for 30 days instead of 7, and it's cheap to list things even if the particular items don't sell well, they get traffic in for you.

The key to buying and avoiding bidding wars,  is using a third party like auction snipe, you enter your max bid and forget about it, it bids for you at the very last couple of seconds, thereby preventing those nasty bidding wars when others see your bid on screen for 2 days.
NEVER put  a bid up days before closing time, thats an invitation to bidding wars like nothing else.
Ive successfully won many many things I've wanted using that and setting it to bid for me no later than 3 seconds before closing time.

Yes, auction snipe charges a very small fee for a successful buy, but I think they still give several free ones to try out.
