Meteorite Hunting and Collecting Forum - Meteorite Museum coming to NC

Hi Greg,

Don't know if I have commented on your efforts for the meteorite museum or not but want to say I appreciate the effort you are making. I have always wanted to try to do something like that here in my area, possibly using my collection, astronomy and space items.

It takes a lot of planning and work. Nininger's efforts to support himself and family with the American Meteorite Museum worked for sometime, especially near the Meteor Crater area but with the sell of the collection that came to an end. I realize that probably isn't your goal.

One thing I have thought about, after I retire, I might put one together for a short period of like six months to a year. Have to be married to the area until I took down the display. Sometimes I know area residents don't have the appreciation for something like that at first. Then when it isn't around they miss it as you open that world up for them. Sort of like astronomy when I was growing up. No club in the area or anyone who really knew about amateur astronomy that could advise me. It was a self learning experience that I did by myself and a friend until I got out of school that was over an 9 year span of time. I later helped start the astronomy club in our area.

Well enough said and good luck with your efforts!

--AL
G'Day Jim
I think it said on the video what it weighed and what it's payload was, but I forget. But I'm totally with you mate, the sound would drive me crazy!! Maybe I'll just wait for the next model that's a little bit more quiet.

Living in a noise funnel, LAX one side, Hawthorne Airport the next, Aerospace, 405 and 105 Freeways... the noise sucks! That's what I enjoy about getting out into the open, just the peace and quiet. It's luxury.

Cheers
Johnno

Hi Ryan,

Since you already have the Allertest kit you can use it for a proper nickel test on your specimen.

Find a SMALL clear glass container or test tube for a piece of your specimen. Put specimen in container and pour distilled white vinegar in to cover the specimen. Let it sit for about 20 minutes, stirring it occasionally. After the 20 minutes pour some ammonia into the container ( about the same amount as the vinegar) and mix it. Then take the dropper of dimethylglyoxime from your Allertest kit and add 2 drops to the container. If there's any nickel content, the vinegar/ammonia liquid will turn red/pink depending on the nickel content.

Hey, what happened to the long bike ride?

Jim

I had a herniated disk in my neck almost 2 years ago, oh boy was that pain, odd thing was the pain was in my ELBOW mostly, along with numbness in fingers and a stripe of pain up the shoulder blade.
The MRI showed it, but after a course of steroids, phys therapy and weighs on the head 3x a day it went away totally.

But during the episode and treatment I couldnt sit down, sitting made it worse, I wasn't able to sit down for more than a minute at a time for over a month.
Randall

Ive sold my work on Ebay since 1999 or 2000, it was worse before when they charged 25 cents per photo and 50 cents for subtitles, nickel and diming you to death.
Now you can put things up for 30 days instead of 7, and it's cheap to list things even if the particular items don't sell well, they get traffic in for you.

The key to buying and avoiding bidding wars, is using a third party like auction snipe, you enter your max bid and forget about it, it bids for you at the very last couple of seconds, thereby preventing those nasty bidding wars when others see your bid on screen for 2 days.
NEVER put a bid up days before closing time, thats an invitation to bidding wars like nothing else.
Ive successfully won many many things I've wanted using that and setting it to bid for me no later than 3 seconds before closing time.

Yes, auction snipe charges a very small fee for a successful buy, but I think they still give several free ones to try out.

Just found this forum after looking around at links on various meteorite sites. I'm a professional sculptor who works in Victorian and Art Deco architectural styles, but also a collector of pieces from building facades, and antiques of various kinds.
I've always liked geology and remember cracking rocks open to see what was inside when I was about 6. Fossils and meteorites have always held a fascination to me but I didn't get around to acquiring any meteorites till recently.
I prefer the irons and their weight so I have 3 of them, one from Campo del Cielo and 2 from canyon diablo.
I'm not sure how many I might add to those, but I expect I'll probably add a couple more.
Randall
Greetings intrepid Skyrockers,

This is a multi-purpose announcement and advertisement. There is a little something here for everyone.

First, my online store now has the ability to handle ratings and reviews. So now you can post a review for those items that I keep in stock, like displays. Obviously this feature is not much use for unique items, like weighed meteorite specimens that are one of a kind. But if you have purchased one of my exclusive displays in the past, feel free to post a review and rating. One out of every 10 reviews will be randomly selected to receive a free meteorite micromount of the reviewer's choice. Reviews will be accepted for items that are not unique and that I keep in stock - trinitite displays, Moon rock displays, Mars rock displays, meteorite collector kits, quartz crystals, and others. There is a link for the review/rating feature on each individual item page.

Second, for those of you on Facebook, you can now shop the Galactic Stone store directly through your FB interface. Simply visit my FB profile and click on my "Shop" tab. From there you can shop the store without leaving FB until you checkout, which is then handled by the usual backend of my store. ---> http://www.facebook.com/galacticstone

I have gone through my stockpile of trinitite and I have listed the last of the red specimens that I have. I also listed a large individual with a natural hole. These are the last red and "holey" trinitite pieces that I have. ---> http://www.galactic-stone.com/products/trinitite

Also, I have some Lake Murray and El Hammami micromounts that will be available soon. These will be shale fragments and small part slices. I expect to have these in the next few days. So check my "Brand New" page in the coming days for these offerings. ---> http://www.galactic-stone.com/products/brand-new

Lastly, if you have a meteorite-related website and you would like to get more visitors, please sign up for Meteorite Top Sites list. This is a free traffic exchange program for all meteorite websites, including dealers. See the top list here ----> http://meteorite.gotop100.com

Feel free to contact me via email with any questions - meteoritemike@gmail.com

Thanks for looking!

MikeG

I don't much care about reading this stuff here either but that's Joe's call.

And: Al, no lectures please. Opinions were requested and mine is as valid as any.
I hate to say it, but I dont think the classification is accurate.
There is clearly 4-6 lithology present and also chondrules visible by eye.

Still, glad to see the L5 classification was within the 4-6 I came up with.

I was told this is a diabase rock which matches the descriptions I've seen over and over. It's unusual for diabases to have much if any silica. Meaning it's not quartz. Scratching on ceramic and glass suggests: not quartz, not hematite, not magnetite. I trusted Prof. Altener to check. Notice the squarish "crystal".. upper-middle.. Feldspar. The whitish veins.. olivine and feldspar. The brown on the perimeter is from the surface of the rock. This piece is a crest of rock between troughs covering 360 degrees of the rock like a dimpled golfball with golfball-sized dimples. The side view in the first picture is probably the poorest example of this weathering.

There's a backstory of nearly 120 years of loony events and 4 generations too embarassing to go into.

I'm not convinced in either direction.

Here is the write up for NWA 6291

NWA 6291 Achondrite (angrite, metal-rich)

Annealed breccia composed of Al-Ti-diopside (Fs10.8+/-0.05Wo53.0+/-0.05, FeO/MnO = 114, Al2O3 = 7.7-7.9 wt.%, TiO2 = 1.3 wt.%), calcic olivine (Fa40.9+/-0.05, FeO/MnO = 94-95, CaO = 1.3-1.5 wt.%), pure anorthite, Cr pleonaste spinel, altered kamacite (~8 vol.%) and troilite. Anorthite occurs as large (up to 3 mm) angular clasts and also as thin coronas around spinel grains. Secondary terrestrial weathering products include iron hyroxides (in veinlets) and minor calcite.

Al, Thanks for your replies. Your probably right on all counts. But scientific theories have a way of changing with time. As we found out that the earth is no longer flat and all the planets do not rotate around it. I think that there will be a lot of surprising discoveries in the future that may change a lot of what we believe today.

Cheers
Jim

I believe what you have there is a piece of hematite.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hematite

There very common here in the midwest and on my last hunting trip to the Wisconsin strewnfield, after hours of walking through corn fields I spotted this stone on the ground. My heart skipped a few beats and I thought I had a fresh oriented meteorite! But after picking it up, it was evident that it was not a meteorite. The black exterior was not a fusion crust. I showed the farmer the stone and he thought it may have gotten into the field when some of his landscaping stones got mixed into his fertilizer spreading stuff. We had a good laugh.

Cheers
Jim

Take a look
